It adjoins Skowhegan to the North and Waterville to the South. The town is bound on the East by the Kennebec River. Conveniently running within the town are U.S. 201 and I-95. Fairfield contains a large commercial and residential urban area, which merges with Waterville's on the South, and three small commercial villages, Hinckley, Shawmut and Fairfield Center. The area of the Town comprises 54 square miles, and has been gaining population at a rate of 1 percent per year for over 20 years. PLEASE NOTE: The following bill was passed by the Maine Legislature: LD2293: To Prohibit In-Person Absentee Voting on November 3, 2008 (Presidential Election). Sec. 1. In-person absentee voting prohibited on the day prior to election day. Resolved: That notwithstanding the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 21-A, Section 753-B, subsection 8, a person may not vote by absentee ballot in the presence of the clerk on November 3, 2008, but a person may still obtain a ballot by written request to vote outside of the clerk's office. ATTENTION TAXPAYERS!! Property taxes are now due on a quarterly basis instead of semi-annual. Property is assessed each year to the owner of record as of April 1. Taxes are billed annually around the middle of August and are due quarterly in September, November, February, and May. Interest on delinquent taxes accrues at 12.00% per annum on taxes remaining unpaid after the set due dates. Our current mil rate is $23.40.
